HOCKEY ACADEMY

HOCKEY CANADA SKILLS ACADEMY

The purpose of SFHCSA (Seventh Fire Hockey Canada Skills Academy) is to offer students an alternative learning opportunity that promotes academic excellence with a holistic approach to health and wellness around the sport of hockey. In addition to physical development, students will improve their sense of belonging, team and social skills, work ethic, confidence, self-esteem, and communication skills.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students participating in the hockey program can earn one high school credit in Physical Education each year, typically during Semester 1B (October to January). In Semester 2A (February to May), students will take an alternative course to ensure progress towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

    • Students in Grades 9–12 receive a Physical Education credit for participating in the Hockey Canada Skills Academy.
    • Students in Grades 7 & 8 take the program as their core Physical Education class, fully integrated into their weekly schedule

ABOUT SFHCSA

Our program is built upon three key pillars of success: detail-oriented instruction led by experienced instructors, timely assessment and feedback, and active community engagement.

Designed to fulfill Physical and Health Education credits, the program offers students hockey skills sessions three times per week and off-ice sessions twice a week. Our experienced instructors provide skills-based instruction with a meticulously crafted curriculum aimed at enhancing players’ abilities. Each session equips players with the necessary instruction, feedback, and repetitions vital for their improvement in the game

To monitor and evaluate player progress, we conduct three testing windows where players receive scores on skating, puck control, and shooting, presented in a comprehensive Player Progress Report. For goaltenders, weekly small-group goalie instruction and personalized goalie analysis videos from our Head Goalie Instructor are provided to facilitate their development.

OFF-ICE TRAINING

Off-ice training, led by a certified strength and conditioning specialist, occurs at both the school and PUSH Fitness Centre. The focus of this component is to enhance strength, speed, mobility, balance, and flexibility, complementing on-ice work. Students also learn about energy systems relevant to hockey and how to construct a fitness routine for a healthier lifestyle. Recovery and relaxation techniques are integrated to promote a balanced routine.

Evidence-based assessments are conducted regularly to measure athletes’ improvement scores throughout the school year.

CONCUSSION & INJURY PROGRAM

All students participate in concussion baseline testing, providing an important “snapshot” of an athlete’s current neurocognitive and physical capabilities. Should a concussion occur during the hockey season, this testing can provide clinicians with important information to which post-injury assessment results can be compared.

All baseline testing data is secure and confidential at Fairway Physiotherapy & Shift Concussion Management.
